What is Natto beans?
Many people probably not know, but it is a popular dish in Japan consisting of fermented soybeans. It’s a great source of protein and considered the “breakfast of champions” by the Japanese. Natto has long been recognized as one of Japan’s most unique traditional health foods. Highly nutritious and rich in protein, it is often eaten with cooked rice. For centuries, natto has been made using a specialized fermentation process by adding beneficial bacteria, Bacillus natto to soybeans.
I did not know that my dogs love Natto until I start making my own about 10 years ago. Store bought Natto is frozen and usually packaged in a styrofoam so I am not surprised that our dogs did not like the smell of styrofoam.
As I wrote on Healthy Happy Pooch on page 72
Natto beans are made from fermented soybeans, natto has enormous health benefits. It’s especially rich in vitamin K2, which can reduce bone loss. Vitamin K is repeatedly shown to reduce blood clots by slowing arterial calcification, enhance liver function, and encourage the flow of urine. When I make natto at home, our dogs gather around the kitchen to get a taste of it. Natto is available in Japanese markets.
